Yuta is fucking awesome.

Hello everyone.

In this blog post, I am going to rave about how awesome Yuta, a character from the webtoon Kubera, is. If you have not read Kubera, then I strongly recommend that you do so. It is an excellent webtoon. It will draw you in and leave you wanting more, much, much more. So, do yourself a favor and go read it. You will probably not regret it.

Anyway, I am now going to start fanboying over Yuta.

[WARNING: SPOILERS AHOY!]

I love this guy so much.

Normally, when it comes to characters, regardless of whether you like or them, you normally get a good grasp on their character traits right of the bat. “Oh, it is a self aware moe girl.” or “Oh, this guy is a slightly modified generic harem lead”, etc, etc.

Yuta is special because I had no way of comprehending just how deep and developed his character would be when I first saw him pop up.

It is not like I hated him or anything, but when he first showed up, he was just a cute kid with uncontrollable urges and a monstrous appetite. He then proved himself to be a good person by rescuing tortured half’s. He was for all sakes and purposes a misunderstood monster. He was just trying his best to get through life and he had no real understanding of kindness and love, but he wanted to do his best for his own kin. I figured they’d have a little arc with him or something and that would be the end of it. Nope.

He joined the crew.  Okay, so I guess he would join the crew, learn a bit about kindess on their adventure and would serve as a side character that would occasionally cause trouble for everyone else, but nothing more that. Up until this point, that is what I had thought. And what I had thought was all totally wrong. I had been proven wrong time and time again.

Yuta’s wasn’t sudden or anything. Like all of the other mysteries in Kubera, as small details about Yuta came out, my perception slowly changed and for the most part, it changed without me realizing it had changed. “Oh, he isn’t just a half, but rather he is a full fledged sutra. Oh, ok, that’s pretty cool, I guess.”, “Oh, he is several centuries old. Interesting.” “Oh, he is a half, but a half between two different sura clans. So, he is a one of a kind, huh. Pretty cool. As expected of a party member of the main party”. “Wait, he is the son/creation of one of the original God’s and a Nastika? Holy Shit”.

At this point, I couldn’t help but be taken aback by everything. We went from a supposedly impulsive hard to control, well meaning half to a half demon/half demon god beast. The changes weren’t all background related though. As we learnt more about his character, the true complexity of his at first supposedly simple nature was revealed.

I severely underestimated the development in Yuta’s character. By the latest chapter, he was no longer just a simpleton who was following Kubera because she was nice to him. He was a fully mature (internally anyway) man who was madly in love with Kubera.

His past was riddled with pain, misfortune and sorrow. He had to kill someone who looked like his mother, countless times. Each and every time, he had to do so because that was her request. He had spent many years looking for his older siblings. He was created to hate and yet raised to love. His wings represented the dual nature of his birth, the dual nature of his love/hate and they personified his internal insecurities at being a monster that did not fit in anywhere. On top of that, he had to put up with the knowledge that his love would likely never come to fruition as Kubera hates full Sura.

Along with these revelations in character depth, came the realization: This guy isn’t just a willy nilly party member. He has become one of the most important characters in this saga.

What an incredible ride.

For all of the above, I have only described to you my thoughts as Yuta developed. I have not yet touched what exactly is it that makes him so awesome. Or have I?

I talked about Yuta’s suffering and confusing past. His mother tried to teach him to hate. She wanted him to consume humans and hate everything. On the other hand, the Garuda’s did their best to instill more honorable philosophies in him. It isn’t easy growing up with two totally different sets of ideologies. The poor kid has suffered so much that you’d think he’d be a hate filled monster, but he isn’t. He is genuinely caring and his smile lights up my screen whenever it makes an appearance. On top of all that, his love, oh god his love, for Kubera (Leez) is incredible.

He knows she hates Sura and will find it difficult to accept him and yet he still does his best to accompany her. He knows she only sees him as a kid (she is beginning to love him more and more though). He thinks she has no real feelings of love for him and yet, he continues to love her. He continues to do his best to keep her safe and protect her.

Back when they were in the canals, Yuta left the boat to confront his step-mother(a creature created by his original mother) in order to let Leez and the others get to safety. That incident could be chalked up to him realizing that his mother is his responsibility and he needs to deal with her, but it was still a self-less deed and a responsible one. Then a few chapters later, he becomes the target for a trap, but the trap heads for Kubera instead. In this case, he could have just let it get her and then thought about rescuing her or he could have tried to fight off the trap.

Nope.

Once he realizes that the trap is set loose and that it isn’t targeting him, he takes immediate action. This is just conjecture, but I believe he first disables the sensors (to make sure the kidnappers don’t notice Kubera or the others), then he gives his sword to Kubera. I think the sword hides power levels. Once the sword is in Kubera’s hands, her power levels are hidden and his revealed. This prompts the trap to go after him instead. Kubera can only stand watch dumbfounded as Yuta disappears right in front of her.

Fucking badass.

I did not do the scene justice, but trust me, Yuta was fucking badass. He really, really cares for his compatriots, and he would do almost anything to protect Leez. Once you realize just how much he likes Leez and just how much he has suffered in the past, you can’t help but want to cheer him on. This isn’t even a matter of shipping, everyone should hope to see Yuta and Leez get together if only because any reasonable human being would want Yuta to be happy. Yuta’s feelings and endearing nature is so very touching and yet, the underlying truth is so very sad.

When he visited his step-mother, she told him of a vision she saw when she used insight on Leez. A grown up Yuta was attacking Leez. This of course leaves young Yuta confused. “Why would he attack her? Why would he possibly dislike her?” And yet, despite the confusion he goes back to Leez. Maybe it is because he wants to continue protecting her or maybe he just wants to be with her and do his best to make sure that future does not come by. It is all so very heart warming and yet, as readers, we know he is going to suffer.

Visions of the future can change, but we already know what happened in the past.

Yuta knows Leez hates Sura, but he has no idea why. He does not know that a Sura attacked her village: supposedly killing everyone in it. He does not know that the attacking Sura was his older brother.

Let that sit in your head for a while.

The girl Yuta is head over heels in love with has sworn revenge on his most beloved brother. This will not end well.

So, I can’t help but be sad for Yuta’s impending grief. I can’t help but shed tears at the future of one of my all time favorite web toon characters.

That is perhaps the greatest thing about Kubera. There are no villains. There are no heroes. Everyone is doing something for a reason. It is possibly to sympathize with anyone, but at the end of the day, someone will end up losing. It is as the season preview claims: “This is a war without villains, only victims… and a story where someone in the end, will have to cry.”.

But for now, I will watch Yuta. I will watch Yuta express his unrequited love. I will watch Yuta be a badass. I will watch Yuta be a fucking awesome character.

Yuta! He’s soo cute! And also one of my favorite characters in Kubera. I really hope his love won’t end up tragic. he really deserve someone who’s nice to him and makes him feel comfortable and who’s a bit crazy too, like Leez.

I ship Leez with god Kubera too, it’s just hard to root for only 1 of Leez looks good with both.

      Yuta is absolutely adorable.

I love how he sometimes blushes despite being more than a hundred years old.

I really, really hope his love doesn’t end in tragedy, but it probably will. 😦

And yes, I can totally vouch for the legitimacy of Kubera god x Kubera human. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there is something very intriguing about their relationship.

      Thanks for the comment. 🙂

I love Yuta, and how much he’s grown. I also like that he’s not *attracted* to Leez in that way. Well, he might be now, but I still love him for it.
Also, Currygom mentions that Kubera’s considered pretty average looking, so he loves Leez for who she is~ (Yay, romance)
Just out of curiosity, I haven’t reread Kubera in a while, where did the picture of grown Yuta come from?

Hah, yeah, Leez is supposed to be quite average in looks, so he does like her for more then just her looks. 🙂

As for the adult picture, it is from the very last chapter of Season 1.

They have shown a more adult form of his several times, but they have all been like visions and stuff of the future. 😛

      Thanks for the comment. 🙂

True!! I love how badass he is! And his unrequited love for Leez ❤ I just hope that his love will bear fruit. But I think he could now, since he's a third-stage Rakshasa now ❤ much bolder and umm.. hornier 😄

Hah, yes. If anything, I’d say he is way too horns now! Hope it ends up being a cute love in the end though. Maybe when Lee grows up and he goes 4th stage.
