Forgive the crude nature of this post, but I figured that a trashy post every now and then is okay. Apologies for publishing this when the 11th episode is likely already here, but oh well. It is not like I am blogging this show episodically or anything. If the title didn’t make it clear, this post is somewhat NSFW, so uhh, don’t read this at work, folks!
Soma episode 9 was of my favourite episodes this season and it was all because of that great bit of singing/humming at the end. Episode 10 continued perfectly on from there.
Similar to how the adaptation of Yamada and the 7 Witches made me like Shiraishi a lot more, the anime adaptation of Soma made me like Erina a lot more. In the manga, she comes across as a very arrogant, self-centred, overly tsun, tsundere, but just adding a voice and animating her makes her so much better and more likable. I can almost ship her with Soma now! Anyway, she was quite pretty in that robe.
A bit later, we got the polar star girls taking a bath. There are two rather remarkable things about that scene.
In all seriousness, Ryōko is actually amazing. She is calm, level headed, reasonable and is a great cook as well. If I recall my ships correctly, I think she goes well with Shun (dude with long bangs who specializes in smoking food). They are cute together! Ryōko x Soma is totally valid as well, as is Ryōko x me (best ship, I swear). Anyway, back to our bathhouse scene.
The first great thing about the bath scenes in this episode is how the anime avoided using “magical body covering mist” and instead opted to use clever camera angles. It is a bit similar to FMP’s, now renown, bathhouse scene where the girls are conveniently leaning on a fence though here objects weren’t used and it was mostly simple camera work. There was no “baiting Blu-Rays” and I can totally appreciate that.
The second great thing about this scene was how innocent it was for an anime bathhouse scene. There weren’t many unnecessary “closeups”, no moaning sounds, no unexpected boob groping or any of the other fanservice tropes that I have come to expect from my ecchi anime. It was still obviously fanservice, but just a higher, more innocent class of it if you will. Actually while I am talking about innocence, it is quite interesting how clean Soma is outside of the cooking reactions. Soma gets a bad rep (probably rightfully so) for its cooking orgasms, but outside of those, this show has very little in the way of actual perverted fanservice.
The whole duck thing was totally adorable. It was very cute and made this scene perfect. It brought a genuine smile to my face.
Continuing on, the Polar Star Girls went to their room and we got…
I have never been much of a Yuki fan, but hair down Yuki is adorable.
The rest of the episode with the actual cooking stuff was also pretty good. We got to see Megumi tested and around this point, she slowly starts becoming a better character. She doesn’t change much throughout the manga, but some of her hesitancy and lack of confidence fades away a little. The next competition arc does wonders for her and I am already liking anime Megumi a fair bit more than initial manga Megumi.
At the start of the season, I was worried about how well this manga would work as an anime. The first episode all but confirmed that the reactions the manga is well known for really shouldn’t be the anime’s selling point. If there is one thing this episode and the one right before proved though, it is that even without foodgasms, Soma has plenty of stuff it can do and do well and the anime is much better when it focuses on those bits.
Oh, what’s that? Have I overlooked the best bit of fanservice this episode? Nope, I just saved it till the end.
Ah, Dojima Gin. He is truly one of Shokugeki no Soma’s best characters. So sexy. So manly. So perfect.
