Some thoughts on 2017 anime I liked

So, 2017 is over and I have published nothing this December, so hey, why not look back on some of the anime I enjoyed this year!

[I was working on this post, lazily like always, intent on publishing it before end of the 31st, but my grandfather passed away around 9 PM, so I rushed the ending to get it through. Sorry, I might fix it later.]

I won’t bother talking about every anime I sampled, just a few more memorable ones. If you want to see what aired this year, go here and then click the season button to jump seasons.

Winter 2017

ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka

Anime of the year.

Well, I don’t know if I can narrow my favourite anime choices down to just 1, but ACCA is definitely a contender for the top anime list. It is just…so good. The atmosphere, the gorgeous backgrounds, the slow burn character development, all of it is fantastic.

And the saddest thing though is that while ACCA was reasonably popular amongst my twitter friends, it definitely seems like something that will be forgotten unless someone looks through a seasonal chart and that’s a shame because I love it a heck of a lot.

Chain Chronicle: Haecceitas no Hikari

Another show/ova/thing I need to finish, but I actually did like what I saw a fair bit, namely the fact that it had a real cool depiction of fantasy heroes.

The hero of the world starts off as our protagonist, but at the beginning of the show he has already lost the battle and is doing his best to regroup, between self-doubts and turmoil he does his best to guide a young kid into becoming a hero.

The world is just so sad. We don’t give the consequence of failure in these ‘defeat great evil’ stories much thought, but that’s whats explored here. The survivors are fragmented and separated and the march of the enemy is relentless. Even the small sanctuary they found with the elves (irc) did not hold out for long. It is depressing and had me in awe.

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maidragon

What a warm lovely show. Maidragon is fundamentally about a dragon finding a new family and a human finding a dragon companion (I use companion here but they are totally married, oh so married).

It has cute faces, is well animated and is just oh so warm and touching. Lovely show.

(Aside: I have heard the manga is very different so maybe I should give the comics a read some time.)

Some tweets

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

Didn’t finish Konosuba S2, but more Konosuba, you know what to expect. Good stuff.

Masamune-kun no Revenge

I can’t recall how far I made it, but I made it further than expected in Masamune-kun. I have read a bit of the manga, but the anime had a nice visual charm if I recall correctly. It helps that a lot of the cast was hot. At one point it became extremely good drama for a bit. I was totally not expecting it.

I had this to say in a previous post:

The relationship stuff got pretty serious. There were tears, almost sex, rejections and questions. I have a feeling it will not end on that high of a note, but that was a surprisingly in-depth jump into the weird romances these kids are weaving. It might have come too late for most folk though and I’ll admit my own love for the cast isn’t especially high any more. (I guess you could say I don’t really like anyone enough to force myself through drama.)

I stopped watching because well I am bad and serious things are hard for me to watch.

Seiren

God, I loved Seiren. The arcs were a little varied in their quality, but I am desperate for more Seiren. Tsukeni was especially good (outside her arc) and I wish she got another 4 episodes. Tomoe and Tooru were both better than expected with I think Tooru getting the sweetest ending.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen

Okay this is the one anime I kept promising I’d get back to, but never did. It had one of the best first episodes I have ever seen in an anime and everything I saw my friends tweet suggests it is most deserving of being called the best anime this year.

I really should watch more of it, but I am also not in a rush because I know something like this remains watchable for many, many years to come.

Urara Meirochou

Never finished it but it had some surprisingly uh fun belly button moments.

Youjo Senki

A controversial show that really came into its own a few episodes in. Yeah, the main character was a fascist loli who loves capitalism, but also the main character got dunked on repeatedly and mercilessly.

Arguably the one episode where everything went according to Tanya’s plan was the episode where we saw her enemies point of view and it was an incredible sad episode. We’d been laughing at the war games for a lot of the show but that was a grim reminder that war is terrible and cruel and everyone who fights and dies on the battlefield has loved ones waiting for them.

ēlDLIVE

Sorry to admit that this show by the creator of Reborn existed. It actually becomes pretty good by the end. One of the episodes that features the main characters relationship with his past best friend is extremely good and one of my favorite friendships of the year probably.

Spring 2017

Boku no Hero Academia 2

I still need to finish season 2, but damn if MHA isn’t the good stuff.

Eromanga Sensei

I’ve talked a bit about it before, but I definitely liked a few things in Eromanta Sensei, namely ELF Yamada and ELF Yamada .  God, we did not deserve Yamada. The other girls including Sagiri were cute and there’s the infamous girls love dick jokes Megumi sprouted, but yeah I definitely wish Yamada was the main girl.

Kyoukai no Rinne 3

I love Rinne so more Rinne was always welcome. It is just sad this season had the worst production levels so the anime looked really not good rather often. Rinne deserves better ;___;

Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Kinki Kyouten

Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor is another show I never finished, but aside from a few uhh rather problematic scenes I did enjoy what I saw. The girls are all cute and their school uniforms rather memorable and the magic shenanigans kinda fun.

Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata S2

I watched Saekano S1 this year and I am putting this here to remind myself that someday I’ll get around to S2 and DEFINITELY LOVE THE HECK OUT OF IT BECAUSE OH MY GOD KATO IS PERFECT, UTAHA IS PRETTY GREAT AND ERIRI IS NICE TOO. GOD WHAT AMAZING GIRLS GOD KATOOOOO IS HOT, AMAZING AND EVERYTHING GOOD.

Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul

I enjoyed the half I saw of Virgil Soul a heck of a lot, but apparently it becomes very questionable afterwords, so maybe it is for the better if I don’t get back to it. Still, Nina is cute, has a great face game and I just love the original Bahamut cast so so much.

Tsuki ga Kirei

One of the few shows from the season I finished. This was a fantastic slow, methodical romance. It is a straightforward coming of age story about two slightly awkward kids, but it is told so well and gah! I was genuinely rooting for them the whole time and any hint of drama or a small misunderstand caused me great pain. Fantastic show!

Uchouten Kazoku 2

Yes! I loved Eccentric Family Season 1, so I was super stoked for season 2 and ended up not disapointed at all. It was great! I am the biggest Benten fan, but I came to like her a lot more after season 2 and Kaisei finally got a good role this time around AND MY SHIP AND GAH! Good show! I love the Tanuki so much.

Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho

Ah man, this is another show I need to finish. I really liked Zero and the Mercenary’s relationship. I think I temporarily stopped when some drama or another came up, but this was a good relationship. I hope it ended well, but I definitely need more fantasy stories with strong protagonists like this.

18if

I never finished 18if and no longer really have a vested interest in it, but god if some of the visuals and director work (I think) did not capture me. I was a huge fan of the war dictator episode and I think I liked a fair few other stories too.

There was also just something eery and nice about a protagonist who let a woman torture her family’s murderer to death. It is hard to describe without using terms like ‘OMG MC is a don’t give a fuck badass’, but I was glad to see the moral flexibility in him and well I enjoyed seeing a genuine criminal get his just deserts.

Gamers!

I think I just didn’t finish the last episode which I hear was mostly fan-service filler (nothing inherently wrong with that but not high priority to finish).

God I loved Gamers!. It was a heck of a lot of fun. Usually I dislike misunderstandings, but they were so much fun here. It was hilarious seeing these goofs jeopardize their perfectly fine relationships because of some hilarious misunderstanding.

It was also great visually and was just nice all around. It helped that I had a crush on Tendou and the FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN UEHARA AND KEITA WAS FANTASTIC .

Hajimete no Gal

I never finished Hajimete no Gal and to be honest, it is not really something so high quality I’d recommend it. I had a fair few issues, namely the dude friends, especially the actually a pedophile friend (sheesh). But! I did find two things very interesting.

The first sort of interesting thing about Hajimete no Gal (or my girlfriend is a gal) was the depiction of sexual fantasies. Usually when it comes to ecchi shows, the onscreen stuff like the MC falling into boobs or walking into a changing room might pander to our (the viewers) fantasies, but while there was some of that here, the main character had a lot of his own fantasies.

MC-kun would, without really wanting to, start fantasizing about Yukana doing something lewd to him and I actually rather enjoyed the separation of fantasy and real within the context of the show. Not sure why, or too lazy to elaborate on why, but that particular part of it didn’t feel wrong. It helped that his fantasies were all with him being dominated, so they felt consensual if that makes sense.

The other thing I liked in the few episodes I saw was Yukana herself. She is rad. I liked her a lot. She was surprisingly smart and saw through MC-kun’s moves pretty well. And I think it would have been nice to have just her and MC-kun explore a relationship together. It is almost a shame that is not all we got.

Isekai Shokudou

What a fantastic show. Relaxing and soothing and wholesome and the black haired elf dragon was hot too and and great show. Like really, check it out if you didn’t. This is peak Iyashikei.

I think I might still have to finish the final episode, but in that regard this is like my Flying Witch from the year before. It is not a show I really want done and over with.

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni.

A fun isekai! Everyone knows how much I like my silly isekai, so of course I’d mostly enjoy this too…..I wish it weren’t a harem though. Is it really so much to ask for to have just 1 heroine (Yumina is best here but Yae is also good) and a good romance? I guess it is. Still, fun enough I suppose.

Knight’s & Magic

If Smartphone was ‘fun isekai’ then Knight’s & Magic is VERY FUN ISEKAI. A very cute protagonist loves robots a lot more than the girls interested in him and he builds bigger robots and the robots fight and stuff and it is great!

These kinds of isekai where you basically forget the protagonist is from our world are my favourite isekai and where the protagonist has a lot of character to them are my favourite isekai! It helps that robots are good.

Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou

I watched more of Youkai Apartment then most people I feel and while I didn’t get around to finishing it, I did enjoy what I saw a fair bit actually.

This is not Natsume (nothing can come close to that level of calm melancholy), but it is a nice show. There is just something really wholesome about the cast. They genuinely care for one another and do their best. I love how Inaba is a tough boy, but he shows emotions, admits his shortcomings and has heart to heart talks with others. I love boys who are so open like this. And Hase is a fantastic best friend.

Oh and Ryuu is one of the hottest anime men this year.

[The following entries are really rushed sorry]

Fall 17

Blend S

Cute, but I hate the manager. Never finished but I might some time because most of the cast is so good.

Garo Vanishing Line

Still need to finish. I like Sophie and Sword a lot.

Houseki no Kuni

God, the gem show is absolutely amazing. Absolutely must finish this.

Imouto sae Ireba Ii.

I fell way behind but man if Imosae wasn’t a surprise fav. The accountant alone made it worthwhile but just the friendship and stuff, so good!

Just Because!

The awkward high schoolers in love show. Tough watch, but extremely good. I need to finish this too…

Net-juu no Susume

I liked it a heck of a lot at first but stopped watching because I felt let down by the romance.

Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara

GOD I LOVE SOMA. I need to watch the 2nd half or so of this season. Just a shame that from here on out it all revolves around Erina’s extremely dipshit dad.

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou

Unbelievably first few episodes. Muuust watch this someday.

Movies

Your Name

I didn’t feel the emotional tearjerking moments as much as my friends, but a solid, really nice movie. I liked it a lot!

A Silent Voice

A Silent Voice was amazingly well directed and animated and it is so good…except I have a few problems with it, and I am sure they are problems with the source material. I don’t like how this movie plays the ‘everyone did a few things wrong card’ when some folk DID WAY WORSE THINGS. It felt like it forgave the bullies a bit too much for my personal taste, but I might be nitpicky.

This was such a hard movie to watch (on iTunes purchased on a UK account) that I couldn’t bring myself to watch it in the theatres when I had the chance.
