God, not only is it 2018 already, but most of the first month has already gone by!
I haven’t checked out every good anime I should have, but here are some thoughts on the ones I have seen!
I like this a fair bit actually! It is a straightforward battle girls who are also maybe cute robot maids show or something. Well, to be honest I am worried it is going to go disastrously wrong in its exploration of ‘are robots human enough to care about’, but for the most part the first two episodes seemed all right and to my taste.
I can already tell episode 03 is well going to be questionable, I just hope I get around to watching it and the rest of the show isn’t any worse.
Darling in the Franxx
This is possibly the show that has generated the most divisive discussion this season (it was Devilman Crybaby at first, but folk seem to have forgotten it cause well it aired in one chunk).
Now my own thoughts on this show…..
Well to be honest I am not really a fan.
Good: The look is really good. People are absolutely right to call this a sakuga marvel. Even if you set the animation aside, the character and robot designs and well basically most other things are damn good looking.
Bad: Well, I am gonna use the common excuse everyone is throwing out, but it is ‘too straight’. And I say that as someone who almost exclusively ships het ships. It is not so much that the romance is between boys and girls, but that it really sort of pushes forward this notion of THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO BE that just seems rammed down our throats.
And well, truth be told, there is something I don’t find fun about shows like this. It may be why I still haven’t watched Neon Genesis Evangelion, but the abused pilots angle feels rather blegh. I call these kinds of shows ‘sad robot’ shows not because the robots are sad but because well everything else is sad and I find little joy in that.
Finally, for some reason or another, this show feels really artificial and cold. I know it is a bit of a rude thing to say given all the effort that’s obviously gone into making it….but y’know it just knows what it wants, pinpoint targets it and all the references they wanna make and leaves no real room for any warmth or heart. That is just a feeling, but you know.
I am still watching the show mind you, but it is a strange ‘I want to sort of keep up with this, but also I don’t think this is my kind of anime’ watch.
Oh and 002 is pretty hot and good.
Death March Kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku
I haven’t seen the newest episode or two, but I have read the manga and well the greatest disapointment is that this is 10000% my kind of isekai with how it approaches the adventure and powers and other things BUT BUT BUT it has one major showstopper and that’s well the fact that there are slaves.
Slaves as in not just slaves in the world or slaves the main character rescues but slaves as in all of the companions of the main character are his slaves. Yes. I just. ugh man. I don’t mean to turn away folk from an otherwise okay adventure, but you know….
Many years back, I wrote a recommendation for the manga and my opinion still holds. Super cute! Super good, surprisingly sad at times and just nice all around. The visuals make the babies so cute! It is lovely all around.
Gin no Guardian 2
I am one of the few folk watching this. It is still a not well made confusing mess, but hey it is chuuni enough for me to be interested. That and I really want to see the story play out. I am a sucker for these kinds of shows.
I like the manga and saw the first 2 episodes or so. They feel a bit rushed and some stuff seems to have been omitted all together? And while Theo wasn’t an especially likeable protagonist in the manga, he felt a bit more fleshed out. Still, Siluca is awesome, as is spear lady, so maybe I’ll try to catch up sometime.
Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens
So, so this show is kind of questionable in how it treats some folk (some violent scenes involving women) buuuut it is so darn campy. The first 1 or 2 episodes especially are a treat in my opinion. I will try to stick with this. It is a silly show I can watch without really thinking too hard about it and those tend to be the ones I watch to the end.
Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san
Takagi-san is one of my favorite manga and the anime absolutely does not disapoint. Takagi-san’s voice in particular is just so delightful as are the faces and the side characters and the teasing, basically it is all good and you should be watching it.
Miira no Kaikata
THE MUMMY SHOW IS SO CUTE AND GOOD. I LOVE IT. The main boys are so cute. The girl is so cute, I ship the MC with her and the mummy is downright adorbs.
Cute, kinda ecchi, very yuri cute show. It is not terribly exciting, but it is about cute girls fighting in a magic tournament or something.
I love Overlord so heck yeah more of it! I am not too fond of the lizardmen conflict, but hey, can always do with more of the overpowered evil Lich and his minions. It is just cool in that regard.
Pop Team Epic
I’m an episode behind, but a masterpiece that is perhaps beyond my comprehension. You watch it and you go ‘oh I kind of like this and can understand why others like IT A LOT but also I am not knowledgeable or smart enough to get 99.9% of these references, alas!’. I am liking this show a lot in general though and that opening is just divine!
Extremely good! This is a toy ad, but like good toy ad anime, it is a good as heck anime. It is about cute boys showing their emotional cores and becoming close friends and stuff like that and you know it is great. The boys are all handsome and good looking and soft like the toys they love.
I’ll note that episode 4 was a pretty hard watch for me, but it is the exact kind of teenage angst one might perhaps expect from boys this age (granted most boys this age wouldn’t place so much faith in a lucky charm, but the arrogance, hubris and the near self-inflicted team isolation is kind of real). Good stuff.
Violet EvergardenI have only seen 1 episode of SakugaGarden, but damn if it wasn’t shiny and just rad as heck. I definitely want to watch more, but it feels like something I really want to be relaxed and in the mood for so haven’t gotten around to it. Still, definitely looking to be as fantastic as the hype for it suggested. (Though going by tweets I’ve seen, it is a lot more low-key and slow burn then they expected, but that’s fine and good.)
Must see: Koi wa Ameagari no You ni
I really must get around to seeing After the Rain. It so badly looks like my jam. Extremely good visuals and a problematic age gap relationship and apparently fantastic characterization. I definitely want to try this.
