Woops. I kind of left this too late…I actually started watching Ookami Shoujo way back in November! November 20th to be exact, but I didn’t finish it because well…shoujo…I am really bad with drama and tend to stop watching stuff when it comes up. I should have known this and picked one of my other picks, but alas! I love Shoujo too much (and this was the shortest anime given to me so…).
Oh and in case you didn’t know, this is part of the Secret Santa project! I took part in it for the first time this year.
Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji (Wolf Girl and Black Prince) is a shoujo. Like most shoujo, it involves a cute, budding romance between high-schoolers. Like some shoujo, the romance starts of with a “let’s pretend to date” scenario. Like most shoujo, the guy is a bit of a jerk and the girl, a bit of a ditz. Like most shoujo, they have some relationship drama and love triangles and stuff. Like GOOD SHOUJO though, the main cast is entirely likeable and like GOOD SHOUJO, this anime is downright hilarious at times.
Right, so I am writing this post as I watch this anime…I have only seen 6 episodes and am now watching the critical 7th. BUT DON’T WORRY! WE CAN DO THIS.
This is the Shoujo romance climax. In the 6th episode, Erika gave some friend chocolate to another boy called Yū and main boy Kyouya got jealous! Sure, he is not dating her for real, but he got jealous, anyway! BECAUSE HE LOVES HER AND DIDN’T REALIZE AND HE THOUGHT SHE COULD ONLY EVER LOVE HIM. WHAT A LOSER.
But have no fear! I KNOW THIS WILL END WELL BECAUSE THE POWER OF THE SHOUJO GODS WILL NOT LET IT END ANY OTHER WAY.
Kyouya just told Yū to do whatever he wants with respect to Erika. Classic Kyouya, unable to figure out he actually loves her. It looks like Erika has had enough of his nonsense and straight up tells him she is tired of being his fake girlfriend.
Kyouya puts up a fake act, but I know he is sad. OF COURSE HE IS. Erika laments her time wasted, but girl, you can’t help your feelings. Don’t worry about it!
Some other girl tries to give Kyouya a cup cake, but he rudely rejects her. Obviously HIS FEELINGS BELONG TO SOMEONE ELSE.
In the meantime, Yū goes on full offence. He asks Erika out on a date and Erika cleverly invites her friend along. Good move Erika. Keep the SHY BOY FROM GETTING HIS HOPES TOO HIGH.
The three of them (Erika, Yū and San) are doing fun stuff together. Then Yū invites Erika out on a date on White Day. NOOO, why did you accept Erika. YOUR HEART IS NOT THERE.
San is showing concern for Erika and gives her good “don’t keep Kusakabe (Yū) waiting too long” advice. SAN IS TOP-TIER BEST FRIEND. The Shoujo goods gave her the hardest role, that of main girl best friend. IT IS A REALLY HARD JOB BUT SHE DOES A GOOD JOB.
STUPID Yū making all these date plans. DON’T YOU REALIZE YOU ARE SECOND FIDDLE. YOU ARE NOT MEAN ENOUGH TO BE THE MAIN LEAD. DON’T GET YOUR HOPES UP. THEY WILL BE DASHED.
Erika sprains her foot because she is clumsy and Yū pulls out the “don’t try so hard, you are a girl” line. Of course, when Yū temporarily leaves the clinic, Kyouya walks in, feigning a need for medicine. OH KYOUYA. YOU WERE WORRIED ABOUT HER.
He spouts something about telling her to be careful since scars devalue a woman. OH KYOUYA. YOU WERE WORRIED ABOUT HER BUT ARE HIDING IT BEHIND FORCED MACHOISM AND THINLY VEILED SEXISM.
He blocks her way out of the room and asks if she loves him (Yū). OH KYOUYA. Erika tells him it shouldn’t matter to him (being a fake ex and all that) and he simply responds “you can’t answer clearly. That means you don’t.” OH KYOUYA.
Erika admits that she doesn’t love Kusakabe, but wants to. Kyouya is shocked. Did you really think she would love you forever? OH KYOUYA. Naturally Yū walks in right then. Erika drags Yū out before the two can have a fight.
Takeru is out with his friends when he sees Erika and Kusakabe walking around. Takeru is BEST BRO. He is Kyouya’s best friend and much like San, he IS AWESOME. WHAT AN AMAZING GUY. Anyway, he sees Erika walking with Kusakabe and calls Kyouya. Kyouya hangs up because he already knew and is mad.
Kusakabe is spewing cheesy lines at Erika and she is feeling sad because she knows she will be happier if she falls for him, BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT SHE LOVES SOMEONE ELSE.
SHE TELLS HIM SHE CAN’T RETURN HIS FEELINGS. GOOD GIRL. I’d feel sorry for Kusakabe, but I don’t like him all that much. Kusakabe tells her he knew that all along and that if she wants to fall out of love with Kyouya, she still can. Erika tells him, no. She thinks she still WANTS to be in love with Kyouya. YOU GO GIRL. GET SOME WIND FOR THAT SHIP.
Kusakabe takes it really well! He talks about how he sometimes gets lost and can’t hold it against her. And how grateful he is for having fallen for her. WHAT A NICE GUY. I HAVE GAINED MAD RESPECT FOR KUSAKABE. GOOD BOY. GOOD BOY. Erika tells him he is nice as well. Good on you for recognizing that!
THESE GOOFS. WORK HARD ERIKA!
And she promises she will keep trying to win over Kyouya no matter how long it takes. Kusakabe tells her it probably won’t take long because Kyouya is right THERE STANDING BEHIND THEM. YOU CAME FOR HER YOU STUPID TSUNDERE JERK.
Kusakabe tells Kyouya to treasure her properly and he smiles and leaves, dragging her along. Erika complains and HE KISSES HER. AWW YEAH. SHOUJO CLIMAX BABY.
Oh god, this is so intimate. I LOVE IT.
WE ARE OVER THE DRAMA HILL. EXCELLENT!
Erika is still mad and asks him to stop being misleading and to just honestly explain what he wants. Kyouya starts explaining in a roundabout way that she is not a waste of time. JUST TELL HER YOU LOVE HER YOU GOOF.
SHE KISSES HIM THIS TIME. AWW YEA. ALL HAIL THE SHOUJO. ALL HAIL THE ONE TRUE SHIP.
SHE LETS HIM BE HER REAL BOYFRIEND. Of course he responds by pulling her cheek and telling her, “she is not letting him, he is letting her and not to get carried away, dog”. OH KYOUYA. It looks like we might have more drama next time. Oh no.
Yay! DONE…now only 5 episodes to go. WOOPS WOOPS.
Okay, I will stop the live post here. I will finish this anime ASAP and come back to update this post with further thoughts (have a few family things I need to do today…).
In the mean time, I will throw down some thoughts below. I doubt watching the anime to completion will change any of them:
Fantastic Main Cast
I love Erika. She is hilarious and makes the best faces. She is also surprisingly not dense and good natured. She is very open and honest about how she feels and that is really nice to see. She doesn’t let her feelings pile up and she doesn’t let misunderstandings control her. I really like Erika. I know I have probably gone overboard with generic Shoujo comparisons, but she is definitely one of the better Shoujo leads I have come across.
I love Kyouya too! He is an incredible jerk…but BUT, he is not a sexually assaulting asshole. So many romance Shoujo guys start of as total dicks who steal kisses or do other things to their “fake girlfriends”, but he never does. Sure, he says mean things to her and tramples on her feelings, but never goes into criminal territory. And for that, I am very grateful. It makes him genuinely likable. He is an asshole, but a very well developed asshole.
Takeru and San are both fantastic best friends. Takeru especially won me over because he didn’t fall for Erika and tried really hard helping her in her quest to make Kyouya fall in love with her. Even Kusakabe whom I didn’t care much for at first, won me over with his incredible niceness. Good boy!

Wolf Girl and Black Prince is freaking hilarious. Erika is such a goof, she keeps tripping or having sport balls collide into her. It is great. The facial expressions, combined with the anime’s very colourful visual direction make for a very fun time. I don’t think this anime is particularly well animated, but there is so much fun Shoujo creativity with the backgrounds, the faces and some of the shot layout!
I love their outfits as well. This anime is amazing because they wear so many clothes that are fashionable and not just the school uniform!
This is a genuinely fun show and I am very grateful to the person that recommended me this as I wouldn’t have watched it otherwise (confession: I had this mixed up with the Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun manga which I didn’t like all that much). Oh and I like the op/ed as well. The ending is especially cute and romantic.

Loved your review! I couldn’t have said it better myself. I dont usually like shojo bu I fell in love with this show so had to spread the epicness. Oh and im the one who recommended it so glad you loved it lol
